Roadtrip anyone? 04/25/2011
So just stumbled across this mix and decided it had to be shared with y'all. Summer sunshine, road trip, and a slampiece who keeps exposing the bikini. What's not to like? Perfect tune to put on in the sun, grab a Magners and start pumpin' away the bank holiday. Not entirely sure how the three-some is going to work out, but the back drop of Vegas, the desert, and a certain amount of smoking makes me wish I was about to jump on a tube to get on a flight to SoCal. Boom!
Add Comment Tron - Daft Punk 02/10/2011
Your Dad's favourite movie is back, in 2011 form, with even brighter U.V. lights and a dirty retro soundtrack by everyones favourite DJ twosome Daft Punk. We wondered where they've been, then we guessed it was probably "All around the world", but whatever, they're back with a bang with some weird progressive scene setting tunes for the movie, and a cameo in an awesome Bar scene that's definitely worth seeing. We've added a few of the tunes after the jump, to set the scene for the film, which is definitely worth a watch.
Mixtape Week - Sam Adams 01/23/2011
The final chapter of what has been a great week for free music.
Today's instalment is a couple of mixtapes from non-other than Sam 'Sammy' Adams, a dude from Boston with a very big online following. He's a touch controversial: he has, over his short career, been called every name under the sun on message boards throughout the interweb. However he has a habit of coming out with one or two absolute bangers each time he drops a mixtape and i'm here to celebrate them. Mixtape Week - Skepta 01/21/2011
You'd better believe that we're still going with Mixtape Week. Today we're getting a little bit UK on yo' ass. Skepta is one of the godfathers of the UK grime scene and today we're going to pay homage to that with his latest mixtape (released last year).
After the jump people. Mixtape Week - Hoodie Allen 01/20/2011
Yes, yes, yes. I'm well aware i'm a day behind. Rest assured you will still get the promised amount of mixtapes, have no fear.
Today's offering is 2 mixtapes and his brand spanking new, released on Monday in the US, track which I have to admit that I have only quickly dipped into, but it sounds pretty good. Alongside that are two slightly older joints, but they're definitely worth a listen. Mixtape Week - OnCue 01/19/2011
The second of our mixtape extravaganza week. Presenting the talents of OnCue, a rapper who we have previously focused on because of a fantastic Red Hot Chilli Peppers remix album. Innovative, different and with some great flow, OnCue is a rapper you should probably know about.
After the jump are a few of his tracks and 3, yes 3, mixtape links for you all to download. Mixtape Week - Golden Era Mixtape 01/17/2011
Hello TopJLaxers, as announced on Facebook, to commemorate the work that Magic D has put into the site, what with the awesome new design and all, I will be giving you all a free mixtape to download everyday this week (at least Monday to Friday)....
Day 1 - Golden Era Mixtape. This thing is huge. Golden Era Records are the record label founded by the Aussie Hip-Hop stalwarts Hilltop Hoods and the artists signed onto the label are all brilliant (Funkoars, one of their first acquisitions, are probably my favourite Aussie Hip-Hop line-up). All the Golden Era family have got together and dropped a massive new mixtape, only released today, and you need it in your music collection. Some of it is a rehashing/remix of their past work, some of it is tracks that were cut from previously released albums and some of it is just awesome collaborations from a load of great rappers and producers. The link to the mixtape, as well as a few snippets from it, after the jump.... Frat Boy Music: I'm back - Coach Dave 12/30/2010
That's right people, another fantastic instalment of Frat Boy Music from yours truly. The following tracks are all bits and pieces that I have been listening to recently, including a mixtape (which is free to download, of course) that I would strongly recommend you download and bump at a high volume.
There are tracks from the UK, Australia and the good ol' U.S of A after the jump... There's been some words floating around on the grapevine. 'Dubstep' and 'dying' are the main ones. However, like a fine wine, it seems to not be dying - far from it - but maturing into something pretty bearable, going by the name of 'Chillstep'. In fact I would say it's beyond bearable, pleasant, outstanding, even. Frankly I don't understand how it took people so long to understand that Dubstep was far more suited to a relaxed vibe than the aggressive, over-produced distorted synth line it took before.
After the jump are some of the latest Chillstep tunes that have been soothing our increasingly aggravated, busy and 'responsible' lives in the Gamma Gamma Frat House. Ps. This genre has developed a wonderful mindset of giving most of their songs away for free, since they've figured most people just download it for free elsewhere anyway. If you search around then you can get a lot of good music in good quality without spending a dime. Anyone remember those days where the only place you could see music videos was on "Kerrang" or "MTV" and that was if you were lucky enough to have sky (not everyone did back in the day)...and yes, we're talking about when MTV actually showed music, rather than Cribs, or My Sweet 16. Not that we aren't partial to a little of that, but I digress.
TopJLax thought it'd take a look at some of the classic influential tunes that were around about 5-10 years ago, when we all dressed in baggy jeans, skater shoes, studded belts, tight t-shirts and had swept emo hair. Remember the feeling of heading to a gig on a Friday night, to mosh your heart out to a band singing (screaming) about girls, arse waggots, and high school. Oh and I forgot the classic rule: As soon as a band becomes popular (i.e. you saw 12 year old wearing their t-shirts... read Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park etc..) they were no longer cool.
