Here at the Gamma Gamma Frat House a few of us have frequent debates about Dubstep. Is it actually crap, good or just a generally misunderstood genre unless you live and breathe it (something we don't really have the energy to do - if you've seen a Dubstep skanking pit you'll understand...)? The major issue people seem to have is like the screaming in Screamo or Hardcore, something termed 'Wobble', something which occasionally dominates the song and becomes a bit overbearing. What we have tried to bring you here is some quality dubstep that are songs more than they are just 'Wobble' and 'Drop', and hopefully for those who have completely rejected Dubstep initially will get you a bit interested in the genre. We completely understand that this genre is one which causes a bit of a debate, so have a listen and sound off. Fingers crossed you enjoy! Sigur Ros - Saeglopur (Enigma Remix) Enigma's fantastic, he has a few really dirty tracks but some beauties. This one is one of them - the vocals are simultaneously soothing and haunting. There's another remix of this by one of the best artists around at the moment - Mt Eden - and we'll give you a hint of him later. Bob Marley - Is this love - Lojik Remix (Mt. Eden Edit)What we really like about Mt. Eden is that he's one of those things that has come about purely from buzz (and probably hard work from him). He's a New Zealand producer, doesn't really have anything out on major labels, doesn't have a Myspace page, and is generally a bit of an enigma. Yet, he has 50,000 subscribers on Youtube (no mean feat), and this is a credit to how phenomenal this guy is. Every song we have heard from him is just incredibly deep and works on so many different levels. Literally just downloaded this song, but just one example of the soulfulness his tunes have. Check out his Youtube here. Sketch - Dubbin Home (GHST VIP) No idea who GHST is, no idea where to download this song from (if you find it please please let us know). The original of this is also sick, but a bit more 'Wobble' heavy so try this one before you go for the original. Fantastic vocal sample though, really nice use of instruments in this as well. 7 Keys - Curtains (Dubba Jonny Remix) Another internet sensation, this one is a bit heavier but awesome, these guys have such an ear for picking out really good vocal samples. You can find their Youtube account here. Just been on there and it's well worth checking out - they're about to release a tune called 'All In' which sounds a-may-zing. Blame ft. Ruff Squad - On My Own (Drumsound & Bassline Smith Vocal Remix) There's also a Drum and Bass remix of this which is equally (if not slightly less) pumping. Heavy, but really well done with a massively energetic feel. I hope you've enjoyed this small look into dubstep and maybe are inspired to do a bit of searching for yourself. I can honestly say that Dubstep is one of the most rewarding genres to look into, you can search for ages and just hear a lot of average tunes, but there is absolute genius out there and when you find it it makes it all the sweeter. Also if any of you are sitting on sick artists that aren't well known - let us know! Equally, if you have any other big tunes I've missed out on, or want to comment on Dubstep in general, sound off below. Oh and there'll definitely be more of this coming your way soon so stay tuned! Peace Bo CommentsMon, 20 Sep 2010 05:13:56 If you're desperate for an mp3 of Dubbin Home, you could always use something like this to extract it: Bo Mon, 20 Sep 2010 15:25:53 Cheers mate - I'm personally a big supporter of zamzar.com for that sort of stuff so managed to nab a 128 version already - it was just on the off chance that anyone had a 320 floating about (the 128 just doesn't do it justice!) Kae Thu, 23 Sep 2010 03:22:27 Good to see your not playing all the pop step ravaging the charts atm. Bo Fri, 24 Sep 2010 05:14:56 Ha, I feel pretty good about excluding 'Magnetic Man' now... That being said on repeat listen that song's a bit turd. Thu, 28 Jul 2011 21:23:42 if you still wanted a copy of dubbing home, i would much rather you messaged me than played a 128! peace.
